“I’m happy that people have chosen a man close to them, honest and transparent.” Those were the words pronounced by Edmondo Tamajo, also called Edy. Only a few days after he got re-elected with 13,984 votes in Palermo, for the Sicilian regional elections, the man is accused of corruption. The Guardia di Finanza (tax and customs police) says people got paid to vote for him.

In 2008, it was 50 euro. This year, the price went down to 25 euro. One week after regional elections in Sicily, two parliamentarians are not even sitting in Parliament yet and are being investigated for corruption. Cateno De Luca, from Messina, is one of them. He is a member of the Center-Right party of the newly-elected President Nello Musumeci. The other name recently added on the list is Tamajo.

Tamajo is being investigated for buying-off many of the votes that got him elected six days ago. According to the Guardia di Finanza, voters were given a handful of euro in specific locations, and are ready to go forward with accusations. De Luca is facing criminal offense aimed at tax violation. The deputy was already facing other accusations related to corruption.

The case of Tamajo is likely to open the door to unpredictable scenario regarding the regularity of the vote. They all started with the interception of Fabrizio Ferrandelli, candidate for mayor of Palermo, and it caught candidates like Tamajo. It is therefore likely to create an earthquake shaking the recent election results.

While mister “honesty and transparency” was speaking following his electoral success, an investigation was already started but not discussed in order to avoid raising any alarm. Three other suspects are being investigated: Giuseppe Montesano, Christian D’Alia and Nicolina D’Alia – and probably more, investigators imply.

In his speech on honesty, Tamajo said: “There was a constant work done in every local administration close to us. Being close and honest always pay.” They pay, exactly.
